Putting the fun
in snail mail.
Each year, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) sends out a direct mail campaign to everyone who applied to study at the uni. The aim of the piece is to promote UTS and encourage future students to enrol. An even greater challenge is to get people to engage with snail mail in the first place.
Since Gen Z never look in the mailbox, I had to think outside the box to get them to look in it. To help them to engage with a printed piece I used a technique called scanimation - which creates “animations” when the brochure is pulled out of the striped envelope. This makes the brochure much more memorable and relevant to a generation who consumes so much digital and video media.
There are four scanimation graphics that can each be animated by refolding the brochure and sliding it in and out of the envelope.
